Family Dog - Beginner

for teen puppies

A lot of teenage dogs suddenly stop listening and starting to develop unwanted behaviours. Our Beginner class is designed to tackle problems that usually happen during their teenage phase and help your dog become a well-mannered, happy and confident family dog using positive and fun methods.

Beginner Family Dog is a 6-week programme where you and your dog will learn to have some impulse control and to be calm in situations with low to moderate distractions, it is so much more than a normal obedience class. This programme is suitable for dogs older than 5 months old.

Prerequisites: Your dog have to complete Puppy Life & Socialisation Group Class or Puppy Start Right Preschool or have taken at least Mini-mester (private programme) to be eligible to join this class

Who will benefit?

This programme is suitable for dogs with some understanding of basic and social skills and would like to take training to the next level to maintain and improve good behaviours through the adolescent or teenage phase.

What to expect from teenage dog?

Teenage phase in dog can occur somewhere between 5 months to 3 years of age. During teenage phase, your dog's brain is still maturing and their behaviour are still changing. Your dog may stop listening and forget what they have learned before. A second fear period may also occur during this time and you may see your dog suddenly become fearful of new and unusual item, place or situation. They may also become scared of items that they are usually fine with.

This is usually the most challenging time for both owners and dog. Teenage dogs may start to test their boundaries and start to do things like barking, chewing, jumping or just stop listening (selective hearing). Therefore, it is recommended to continue training and socialisation using positive and fun methods - in a safe environment.

What will you learn?

You will learn to practise important life-skills in a low-moderate distraction - your dog will learn to be calmer around other dogs and people.

  • Understanding teenage dog: You will learn to read your dog's body language and communicate with your dog clearly; creating a life-time bond.
  • Basic training with distraction: sit, attention, stay, leave it, loose-leash walking.
